Stephen Moorer, an entrepreneurial and charismatic actor/director/producer enters the story from stage right. He founded GroveMont Theatre, a production company that has since morphed into Pacific Repertory Theatre (PacRep).The Golden Bough Playhouse was on the chopping block, with plans calling for its plot of land to be subdivided into home sites. As executive director in 1993, Moorer spearhead- ed a successful fund raising campaign that saved the theater to house PacRep under its roof, bringing back the glory days of Kuster’s Theatre 126 C A R M E L M A G A Z I N E • W I N T E R 2 0 2 4 The Golden Bough burned twice. The first building was on Ocean Avenue and the second location, seen here, was on the current theater’s Monte Verde Street site. The theater on Monte Verde, as it appeared before the above fire.
