Comet, a female orca, is part of a friendly pod known to calmly approach boats—one is called Bumper for his habit of bumping against boats. Frediani says she’s never seen an orca do a full jump out of the water like this and was incredibly lucky to capture it. In 2014, Pacific Ocean temperatures rose, leading to anchovies entering Monterey Bay—and the Santa Cruz Yacht Harbor, where they died off. Officials used sever- al methods to clean up the odiferous mass of fish, includ- ing using nets as seen here.
